Cristina Ogiefa
Q&A
Who’s is Cristina
My name is Cristina Ogiefa, and I’m a 22-year-old chef from Rome, Italy. Though I was born in Italy, my roots are in Benin City, Nigeria, where I spent six years of my childhood with my grandparents. Those years were some of the best of my life, filled with warmth, culture, and unforgettable memories. This unique mix of cultures has deeply influenced my cooking, blending the vibrant, bold flavors of my Nigerian heritage with the rich culinary traditions of Italy.
Do you consider yourself an artist?
I consider myself both a chef and, I may say, an artist. Cooking allows me to express creativity and emotion, merging the tastes of West Africa and Italy with fresh, dynamic ingredients. I enjoy introducing playful twists to traditional dishes, creating new experiences while honoring the original flavors.
Your journey?
My passion for food began when a kind manager gave me the opportunity to work in a kitchen, which changed my life. Cooking became more than just a job—it became a space where I felt inspired, connected, and challenged. Eager to learn more, I sought out high-level kitchens where I could grow and be inspired by talented, creative chefs.
While I respect traditional food deeply, I believe there’s always room for subtle innovation. It’s not about making bold statements but introducing small, cheeky changes that breathe new life into classic dishes.
Food as Art
Emotions and creativity go hand in hand when you’re passionate about what you do. Working alongside creative, tough Michelin-starred chefs has shaped my approach and continues to inspire me.
One of my favorite moments in the kitchen is plating. It’s when I feel most artistically empowered, turning each dish into a visual and sensory experience.
For now, I would love to have a residency in a kitchen where I can showcase my dishes. Though I may be young, I’m old enough to create a dish that you’ll never forget. I’m still on a learning journey, excited to continue evolving, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to share my passion and story with your readers.
